Louisville Special

Earl McDonald's Original Louisville Jug Band, 1927

The original version was recorded by Earl McDonald's Original Louisville Jug Band on March 30, 1927 in Atlanta, Georgia, with Lucien Brown on alto sax, Benny Calvin on mandolin, Cal Smith on banjo and Earl McDonald on jug.

This arrangement is unusually top-heavy, with the sax, mandolin and banjo all on the high end, and the banjo resting for a verse in the middle. Fortunately, Earl McDonald's masterful jug playing helps balance the sound.
