Taking Your Place
The original version was recorded by the Memphis Jug Band on October 3, 1929 in Memphis, with Will Shade on vocal, rhythm guitar and harmonica, Charlie Burse on lead guitar, Ben Ramey on kazoo and Jab Jones on jug.
Will Shade rarely gave up the lead guitar role, but on this song he passes it to Charlie Burse, who handles it beautifully. He mostly plays standard blues licks, but gives a taste of his ebullient personality with an emphatic bass run at the end of each verse. Meanwhile, Shade stops playing guitar at the start of the solo section in preparation for a harmonica solo, but for this recording I continued playing Shade's guitar part to the end of the song.
